Rude awakenings of a Jane Austen AddictRude awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the sequel of Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict and, in this occasion, we have the chance to know about the adventures of Jane, a young woman from Regency England, in 21st-century America. This funny and clever book will keep you reading until you discover whether it is possible that Jane go back to her Regency England.

Jane wakes up in a tiny apartment and can’t believe her eyes. When she meets handsome Wes, who reminds her of a suitor she had at home, her world will spin around. Apart from that, she doesn’t recognise anything from this strange place where she is now. The only thing in common with her world is Jane Austen. Will she be able to survive in such a different environment? Will she discover the way to go back to her own life? To her own body?

This book is funny, the characters are fantastic, and I am sure you will enjoy it.

The Witches of CambridgeThe Witches of Cambridge by Menna van Praag

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I got a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

When Menna van Praag’s publicist contacted me to ask if I would be interested in reading and reviewing this book, I couldn’t be more excited. Although I have stopped reviewing upon request, I still have a tiny list of authors that I gladly read and review: Menna van Praag is one of those authors. She made it to my list when I read “The Dress Shop of Dreams”. I have always enjoyed reading books that include magic, and the magic realism in the books of this author is just a lovely addition to the cute stories that she creates.

Let’s see what “The Witches of Cambridge” has to offer. The story of a group of friends and family members who are connected by magic and love. Amandine is the empath who cannot figure out her marriage. Kat and George are too logical and immersed in their mathematical equations as to realise their own feelings, even with the help of magic. Cosima is the magic baker who can create unexpected results with her spells. Amandine’s mother is the psych who will struggle with lost and new love. And Noa… she possesses a very special gift that she regards as a curse, and when she meets a sexy painter, things can take a turn… for the better? Not all that shines is necessarily gold.

It was really interesting reading all their stories, how they interconnect, and how they solve their personal puzzles. The characters are wonderfully portrayed and developed, and the story won’t leave you alone after closing the book. An amazing story of love, family, and loss, with twists that are hard to predict, and with characters that will become your new best friends.

I am really looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Claimed by LoveClaimed by Love by Melissa Foster

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

One more cute and sweet story written by phenomenal romance writer Melissa Foster. Gabriella and Duke are sweet and hot in equal measure. When Gabriella has to face the possible selling of her beloved family island, she is not happy at all. When Duke goes to Elpitha, he never thought he would find a hot-blooded Greek woman like Gabriella, who would drive him crazy. Crazy in the good way, of course. What happens when two people who are heavily family-oriented have to face their fears? I won’t spoil anything here, so make sure you read this book.

The story is cute and sweet, but it didn’t have a lot of action or tension, so it wasn’t very gripping for me. But I enjoyed it because Melissa Foster’s books are the perfect escape from reality, and I fantasized all the time about escaping to Elpitha and being able to disconnect from routine and my busy life. If you like hot, hunky heroes and strong female characters, this is the book for you, and I double dare you not to fall in love with the Greek atmosphere of the island depicted in this book.

Confessions of a Jane Austen AddictConfessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book long time ago, after bumping into the author in the Twitterverse. I liked the premise of the story, so I decided to buy the books (indeed I own a signed hardback of this book) and give them a try. When I started reading the book, I really liked the idea of a Jane Austen Addict waking up in Regency England, mainly because I am a Jane Austen addict myself. I liked the story because it is funny and different to other Jane Austen fan fiction that I have read afterwards.

Courtney Stone is a woman who lives in L.A. with her many frustrations. She feels that her life is a mess. After having an argument with her best friend and discovering that her fiancée was cheating on her, she sets in her house to read Pride and Prejudice. When she felt asleep, she couldn’t imagine that she was going to wake up as Jane Mansfield, a young woman living in Regency England. A dream come true! A Jane Austen addict living in Jane Austen’s period and country! But Courtney/Jane will discover that life during the Regency period in England is not the same as life in 21st-century America, obviously, and she will have to get used to her new life style. Will she be able to go back to her own life? Why is she living Jane’s life? Maybe she has to help to solve something in Jane’s life so she can recover her life?

One of the difficulties when writing a novel as this one is the language. And I think that the author manages quite well to write in modern English the parts that require it, and to write in the English spoken during Austen’s period when dealing with characters and events happening in Jane’s house.

The characters are well portraited, as well as the atmosphere from the period. It proves the author did a lot of research before writing this novel.

Really entertaining book for lovers of books with different twists and lovers of Jane Austen-like novels.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think that I would have given 5 stars to this novel if I hadn’t found some odd things (motorbikes that appear and disappear, for example), or if I were a native speaker of English. Or even better, if I were a native from Texas. The author uses acronyms a bit too much. Maybe those acronyms are clear for people whose mother tongue is English, but I didn’t understand them and sometimes I was a bit lost about what they were talking about. And Nicola, the main character, is the kind of character that gets on my nerves.

Apart from that, it is an enjoyable novel, full of romance and hints taking us to the world of Jane Austen. The plot is quite original, even though it is not the first time we read about journals that speak to the ones writing on them (remember Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?). But nonetheless it is a good book, quite entertaining, and I liked it a lot. I am a sucker for a good romantic story, and a sexy Scotman is a good hook to keep you reading. The story keeps you wondering what will happen next, what will happen when Nicola checks the journal, or what will happen when she is about to meet what destiny has in stock for her. The magical element is interesting and gives this book an original twist, making it stand out from the other books belonging to the category of “Austen fan-fiction”.

A variety of different characters will play a certain role along the novel, and all of them will contribute to the development of the story in some or the other way. So, if you like a romantic novel about sexy encounters spiced with a bit of magic, this is the book for you.

About the Author

I’m a Queensland, Australia, gal and live in a small village in a rural area where the noise is that of birds and the air is clean.
For 35 years I worked as a Nurse in ER and Theater. I retired in 2011 and since then I have been able to devote my time to my first love and passion – storytelling.
Married to a Naval Officer for 44 years, we moved around the country on postings and lived overseas in Papua New Guinea for 3 ½ years. Living in a place, experiencing what the cities have to offer, their own unique beauty and way of life, gave me great ideas for stories I would later write.
Under my real name – Susan Horsnell, I write Western Historical Romance set in Texas or South Dakota (as I have travelled extensively in both) and so as not to confuse my readers, I write Steamy Contemporary, M/F, M/M, Menage and even a Shapeshifter under my pen name of A.L. Simpson.
I love exploring different genres and using life experience to weave into my stories. I love drama, twists, hard heroes with a soft center, which is sometimes hard to find and strong heroines who find themselves completed when they find their soulmate.
In our retirement, my husband and I travel a great deal although now, with an aging and ailing dog, we have confined it to exploring the beauty of Australia in our very well-appointed caravan as we are able to take her with us. I document our travels on my Facebook page for all to enjoy with me.
I hope you will take the time to pick up one of my books and I look forward to hearing from my readers either via Facebook or email.

Olive felt ordinary. Always last to be picked for teams at recess and never a Valentine placed on her desk. Olive blended in. Until one day at a daddy-daughter dance, the dancing gorilla picked her from the crowd!
He scooped her up and twirled her around the dance floor. Olive’s soul sang! THE GORILLA PICKED ME is a fun, sentimental story that reminds little girls that they are all worthy of attention.  No little girl is ordinary!
